How To Prune Evergreen Shrubs

Pruning evergreen shrubs allow you to control their size and shape, which enhances the character of the plant. Pruned evergreen shrubs are generally healthier and more disease resistant.

Evergreen shrubs in the southeast are a very diverse group that holds their leaves all year round. Azaleas, Rhododendron, Camellias, Ligustrum and Laurels are just a few of the many evergreen shrubs that are popular in our region.

Pruning of evergreen shrubs is done typically after winter in mid-spring, April, May, and June. Pruning too early can cause severe die back if the plants flushes with new growth and cold returns and freezes the tender growth. Azaleas and Rhododendron always are pruned after they flower to keep from destroying the blooms and color that they are popular for. Waiting too late can cause flushes of new growth that could get damaged by early fall frost.

By pruning evergreen shrubs, you keep your plants a desirable shape and form. Healthier new growth is a great deterrent for disease. Pruned evergreen shrubs in a yard allow a better sense of balance and look to your garden.

Happy Pruning!
